Putin Bio..
Vladimir Putin has been the President of Russia
since December 31, 1999 following the rule of
former President Boris Yeltsin. Vladimir Putin
was born October 7, 1952 in Leningrad and holds
no political party.
Putin's father served in the submarine fleet
and his mother was a factory worker. Vladimir
Putin graduated the International Department
of the Law Faculty at the Leningrad State University
in 1975 and after graduation he moved to East
Germany. In the early 90's he returned to the
Soviet Union and has held the position of an
advisor to the chairman of the Leningrad City
Council, and after a few tries he became the
chairman of the St. Petersburg City Councils
International Relations Committee.
In
the second half of 90's the political career
of Putin moved forward very rapidly, where in
1996 (August) he was appointed deputy head of
the Presidents Administrative Directorate,
and in 1997 (March) he was the deputy head of
the Executive Office of the President and head
of the Central Supervision and Inspections Directorate,
then in 1998 he was promoted to first deputy
head of the Presidential Administration, in
1998 (July) Putin was appointed director of
the Federal Security Service and in March 1999,
he combined this position with that of Secretary
of the Security Council.
The major turning point in Putin's leadership
ambitions came in 1999, when the previous President
of the Russian Federation, Boris Yeltsin, appointed
Vladimir Putin as the Prime Minister of the
Russian Government in 1999 (August) and in March
2000 Putin was elected in the first round for
the President, due to the unexpected reassignment
of Boris Yeltsin in December 31, 1999.
During
his leadership as President of Russia, Putin
confronted several political and economic crises
such as Kursk submarine issue, Beslana and the
war in Iraq issue, along with the controversial
arrest of the oil billionaire Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
Policies
implemented by Putin have often concerned the
strengthening of his political position, by
taking control of mass media and the economy.
He has also implemented policies regarding terrorism
and the war in Iraq issues, the bilateral relationships
with he United States, the EU and NATO, the
issues in Chechnya and has gave a lot of attention
to the Baltic States, Ukraine and Belorussia.
Putin's
is married to Liudmila Putina and the couple
have two daughters, Yekaterina (born 1986) and
Maria (born 1985). The President of Russia has
been interested in judo since he was 14 years
old and he has won judo contests in Saint Petersburg.
Right now he holds black belt and has the President
position of the Yawara Dojo.
