John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born
on January 3, 1892 in South Africa to Mabel
and Arthur Reuel Tolkiens. At the age of 3 Tolkien
moved to England.
He
is known as a British author, but Tolkien also
worked as a professor in English and literature.
Tolkien had graduated from the University of
Oxford in English language in 1915. After graduating
he joined World War I and soon started writing.
Tolkien
is the author of the famous "The Lord of
the Rings" and "The Hobbit" series
of books. He was also interested in philology
and linguistics. He explored Greek philology,
Old English and Middle English texts, Germanic
philology and many others.
Tolkien
also did academic works (such as A Middle English
Vocabulary in 1922; Beowulf: The Monsters and
the Critics in 1936; English and Welsh in 1963)
and posthumous publications (The Silmarillion
(1977); The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien (1981);
The Monsters and the Critics (1983)).
His Lord of the Rings story was translated into
the successful Lord of the Rings movie trilogy
by New Zealand directory Peter Jackson.
