Vincent
van Gogh Bio..
Vincent van Gogh was born on the 30th of March
1853 in the Netherlands and is one of the most
widely known artists in the world. His most
productive and famous production period in his
life was 10 years before his death (Vincent
van Gogh committed suicide by shooting himself
in the chest).
Van
Gogh began his artist career when he was 16
by working for an art dealer in the Hague and
was later supported by his brother Theo all
his life. Van Gogh moved to London in 1873 and
then to Paris, where he developed his interest
in religion, and had hoped to become a priest.
During his lifetime Van Gogh had been a minister
in a small church in Belgium.
Van
Gogh started painting seriously in the 1880s
and was influenced by artists like Jean-François
Millet (1814 1875), Georges Seurat (1859
1891), Paul Signac (1836 1935),
Paul Gauguin (1848 1903), the Hague School
and Japanese art prints. Van Gogh concentrated
mainly on rural views, landscapes and peasant
life, depicting it how he felt it.
During
his lifetime van Gogh had very little success
as an artist, although he was financially and
emotionally supported by his art dealer brother,
Theo van Gogh. His art was supported and liked
by his fellow artists and was beginning to gain
recognition among art collectors before his
death from suicide in 1890.
There
is now Van
Gogh Museum in Amsterdam that is dedicated
to the work and life of the Dutch artist. His
paintings now reach record prices at auction
houses around the world and are displayed in
most of the most prestigious art collections.
His masterpieces include
such paintings as "The Potato Eaters"(1885),
"Cafe
Terrace at Night" (1888), "The
Red Vineyard" (1888), "The
Starry Night"(1889), "Still Life:
Vase with Twelve Sunflowers"
(1889), "Portrait de l'artiste sans barbe"
(1889).
